Hello again from The Frugal Teacher! Sorry it's been so long since I've posted. Life has kept me busy, not to mention the fact that I have five (yes 5!) jobs. I'll have to write about all of my jobs in a future post. Let's dig right in on how to save money with mobile apps.
In this technological age, everyone has a smartphone. While we could debate the pros and cons of having our phones with us constantly, I’d rather focus on how we can use easy-to-download apps to save money in a series of columns I’ll be writing in the coming weeks.
Using apps to save money is super easy to do and only requires a little bit of work at the beginning to set up. Creating accounts for lots of apps can be tedious, but once your account is created they are easy to open and use all over town. I’m going to focus on apps that meet the following criteria: I’ve personally downloaded and used them, the app saves you money, and the app is easy to use.
Restaurant Apps - If you haven’t downloaded and used the many restaurant apps available, you are missing out on a lot of free food! Restaurant apps make it easy to save money when you order your food and also make picking up a to-go order a breeze. The restaurant app I have personally saved the most money with is the McDonald’s app. Every time I go, I give the cashier my code and am treated to discounts, BOGOs, and often free food. This app is easy to use and tracks your rewards points for you. You can scan the QR code right on your phone if you’re going inside or just give the 4 digit code that pops up in the app to the person who takes your order in the drive thru. I’ve also saved money with the mobile apps for Starbucks, Subway, Dairy Queen, Burger King, Little Caesars, Dunkin', and Hardee’s. I can vouch for all of these and have had no issues using them regularly to save money. I hope you give them a try if you don’t use them already.
Gas Apps - My parents just discovered the Circle K mobile app and have enjoyed redeeming their discounts. What I like most about the Circle K rewards program, called Inner Circle, is that you don’t have to open the app on your phone to use it because you can simply enter your phone number at the pump or at the register. If you haven’t signed up for their rewards program yet, you are missing out on saving some serious money. You get 25 cents off per gallon of gas for the first five fillups and also get five free fountain drinks! After those first five fillups, you still save 3 cents per gallon. Circle Ks are everywhere now with more locations popping up all the time. While Wawa, Marathon, Citgo, and Sunoco all offer rewards programs through their mobile apps, I have not personally tried them but encourage you to check them out.
This wraps up Part 1 of Using Apps to Save Money. Next time will focus on grocery stores and various apps you can save money with at a variety of stores. Do you have a favorite app you use to save money? Shoot me an email at frugalteacherlife@gmail.com or simply go back to my home page and fill out the form at the very bottom. I can't wait to hear from my frugal readers!
